#JustGirls: A discussion by girls, for girls, on shaping equal justice

#Act4RuleofLaw Online Event for the International Day of the Girl

Each year, 11 October marks the International Day of the Girl. This year, UNODC’s #Act4RulefoLaw campaign is mobilizing to make the world a better and more just place for girls through the rule of law.

Women and girls represent half of the world’s population, but gender inequalities are still deep-rooted in all societies, bringing entrenched patterns of discrimination, exclusion and abuse. The rule of law plays a critical part in the recognition and protection of women’s rights, and entails the full equality and participation of women and girls.

Today, women also serve in increasing numbers as judges, lawyers, government officials, and community activists. Late American Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, South African Jurist Navi Pillay, Canadian jurist Louise Arbour, late Pakistani human rights lawyer and activist Asma Jahangir, and many more women pioneers have dedicated their lives to justice, equality, human rights and the rule of law, and continue inspiring more girls and young women to follow their path.

UNODC’s #Act4RuleofLaw is joined by Politics4Her, Education4Her and young leaders of Women Deliver,  to amplify the voices of girls, not only for them to stand up for their rights to safety and education, but also to encourage their active engagement in shaping equal justice for all.

Featuring women activists from across the world, the online event #JustGirls will:

  1. Share the stories of the iconic women role models in justice including: Late American Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, South African Jurist Navi Pillay, Canadian jurist Louise Arbour, late Pakistani human rights lawyer and activist Asma Jahangir, etc.;
  2. Share the experiences of young women activists contributing to equality; and
  3. How women’s equal participation and representation in politics and justice matter to the rule of law and to creating a fair and inclusive environment for all.
